Nesvizh Jewish innkeepers in 1660s

Nesvizh Name Index Census 1660s

This is the list of Jewish residents from Kopyl, Slutsk district.

This is the list of Jewish innkeepers of Nesvizh. They paid taxes to the Castle, i.e. prince, since Nesvizh was a Radziwill family pocession. The list indicates categories beer and honey. Some paid individually some paid in both categories. Since these are innkeepers, perhaps this indicates the early form of the alcohol license.

Originally found within a group of documents related to 1657 Nesvizh census,
which also includes the list of property owners from 1671. Therefore this list must be at least from 1660s.

1661 Slutsk census

Slutsk Name Index Census 1661

This is the list of Jewish residents from Slutsk, Slutsk district extracted from 1661 inventory.

Slutsk at the time was not only center of district but also part of the Slutsk princedom ruled by Radziwill family. There are two sections Old Town and New Town. These early censuses usually only listed heads of the household. However, as far as I know this is the earliest census of Slutsk where Jews were recorded.

Important historical information for researchers.

  • In this early period, Jewish residents were concentrated in historical Slutsk, known as Old Town.
  • There is a court document from the early 18th century shows one of the early Radziwill princes allowed Jews to settle Jewish Street (Ulica Zydowska).
  • Later censuses have this street included as well.
  • Now we have reference from this census to Zwierzowska Street "where Jews live". Later on the same street is called "Ulica Zydowska", in quotes. Clearly this nickname of the street already existed by 1661.
  • Thanks to this census we can identify the original name of the Jewish Street in Slutsk.

Russian army requisitions in Slutsk during the 1812 War with Napoleon

List of Jews who suffered loss of goods by the French and Russian Army requisites during the war.

Slutsk List of Names War 1813

Part 1. Jews who suffered loss by Russian army and did not have receipts. Sub-total of ruble-equivalent goods taken by the army is listed here as 40,648.47.

This article which is part of a Slutsk district records offers the rare glimpse of effect of wars on the economy and lives of our ancestors. This list was created in 1813 for the tax purposes. It covers the second half of the year 1812.

1812 was significant for this year Napoleon invaded Russia. The war officially started on June 24 when French army crossed the river Neman. The last remnants of the French army left Russian territory by December 14, 1812. The front steadily moved East throughout the Summer and to the West during the Fall and Winter of 1812. Both sides took goods from the local population.

Since this list is dated from June-July 1812, I suppose requisitions happenned during the Russian army's retreat early in the war. This list was likely compiled for the prince of Slutsk. Thus all names are written in Polish and most individuals don't have last names recorded similarly to the earlier Polish censuses.

I have postponed releasing this page for few years trying to translate the value column to the best of my ability. However since I am not very fluent in Polish...here goes.
